Henri Matisse was a famous French artist born in 1869 who started painting at age 20 while recovering from an illness. Three cool things about him are that he used wild, non-realistic colors, "painted with scissors" to make giant paper cut-outs, and started an artistic group called the "Wild Beasts". [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Wild and Crazy Colors
  • Matisse did not think grass had to be green or the sky had to be blue.
  • He used bright reds, oranges, and pinks to show big feelings instead of real life.
  • People called his group of friends the Fauves, which means "Wild Beasts," because their colors were so loud and bold. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Painting with Scissors
  • When he got older and it was hard to stand and paint, he did not stop making art.
  • He took bright painted paper and cut out fun shapes with big scissors.
  • He called this amazing trick "painting with scissors". [1, 2, 3, 4]
Giant Room-Sized Art
  • His paper cut-outs did not stay small.
  • He and his helpers glued giant shapes straight onto the walls.
  • Some of his final artworks grew as big as entire rooms.

Teachers Pay Teachers Offer Easy Follow Along How To Tutorials:

Henri Matisse painted The Dancer in 1931 using bright colors and a cutout technique. Three cool facts for kids include how he used giant paper scissors to make art, how the dancer looks like she is spinning in the air, and how the painting is huge like a wall. [1, 2]
Paper and Giant Scissors
  • Matisse got very sick when he grew old.
  • He could not stand up to paint.
  • He took big paper and cut shapes with giant scissors.
  • He called this "drawing with scissors." [1]
Flying and Spinning
  • The dancer in the picture has no face or details.
  • She is just a bright pink shape against a blue and black box.
  • Her arms and legs stretch out far.
  • It looks like she is jumping or spinning in the air. [1]
