Creativity and Movement: The Little Sparkly Lights of Joy

We have been practicing a ton of joy and color in the classroom.  I recently transitioned to an indoor classroom with a younger age Montessori Primary classroom.  With the change I have had to restructure the types of art and crafts that we do.  I have definitely enjoy the challenge.  It has challenged my brain to adapt the way I teach.  It has also invigorated my belief that art can be taught as any age and more importantly that the jot of creativity is universal crossing age and economic background.  I feel BLESSED to be able to share this with the younger generation.

Creativty and Movement: Woodworking with Preschoolers

I have been looking for projects that are preschooler friendly.  First though we have begun to get acquainted with wood.  The feel of wood in your hands.  The way it sits next to each other, works together.

Next we explored the way hammers and nails work together.  The weight in which to strike the nail to the hammer.  Lots of learning and lots of lessons through this process.

Creativity and Movement: Another Whimsical Twist on Owls

Another beautiful Made by Joel Art work that invites your heart to play.  the kids loved using crayons, markers and paint to design these beautiful mandala like owls.  I added a little twist by having them cut out a mustache, design the accessory and choosing which owl would wear it best.

Creativity and Movement: Dream Catchers are my Favorite to Make

I have an obsession with dream catchers.  Always have.  I never had one as a child because my mom was very leery of superstitious items around her children.  I simply loved the look of them but never knew what they were called until I got older.  When I found out the name I loved them even more.  When I understood the sentiment behind them, I embrace them even more.  Don't we need a few of these surrounding us in adulthood? I think so too.

I have taken a more whimsical approach using paper plates and scrapbook paper.  I made sure to include the feathers and offered all different types of ribbon options.

This is definitely another project that us big girls would love to do, maybe even put a more sophisticated twist on it.

Creativity and Movement: Fall Wreaths

Wreaths seem very universal for any season.  We adapted our wreath to fall for a wonderful opportunity to play with color.  I spent much of my childhood in Michigan and one of the things I loved to do was watch the leaves change color.  Not really much of that happening in the Arizona Desert.

So here's was our change to bring the fall colors to the desert.  I found a template of fall leaves for the children to paint using vibrant watercolors.  Then we used colored tissue paper to add even more vibrancy to our wreaths.

Creativity and Movement: Popsicle Stick Sailboats

We have this basin that I have been wanting to utilize.  Did you know that children and water play go hand in hand?  Popsicle sticks, glue, markers and cardboard from random boxes.

We explored:
- how large or small the sail should be
- how long the boats can be submerged before the school glue gives out
- what we can do to cause the boat to move.

The whole process was a three day project which can be difficult for preschoolers. Also the patience it takes to glue the popsicle sticks just so.  Day 1 we glued the raft portion of the boat.  Day 2 we design the sail and attached it to the raft.  Day 3 was sail day.

Creativity and Movement: Three Little Birds sitting on a Nest

I am always so tickled to see what children will come up with when you simply give instructions and not offer your own interpretation of the finished project.  Lately I have begun to NOT create a sample of the work and just allow them to take my words and interpret the project the way their mind would enjoy.

You can see the many interpretations of the nest for example.  And the design of the birds.  I take this in very deeply and let it inform my 'big girl' work.

We used paper plates, strips of scrapbook paper, crayons, and markers for the nest.  I used simple copy paper for the birds and we did sponge painting on the bodies before adding the googly eyes.

I bet you have all these things in your home right now - I invite you to go play!

Creativity and Movement: Preschoolers Engage with Picasso

I have been trying to come up with a way to teach the Master Artists to our preschool class.  The environment is set up in such a way that the children are allowed to come and go between the two environments - inside and outside - which does not really lend itself to holding and capturing their imagination. I attempted to connect with our local art museum and unfortunately the art programs they offer do not have curriculum for 3-5 year olds.

In the meantime I found this beautiful coloring page by Picasso and have invited the children to play with colored pencils.  Then we cut and glue the figure onto construction to give it a look of framed art.

Here is a link to this template - yep another great opportunity to play!

Creativity and Movement: Working with Paper Cities

I came across this great website called "Made by Joel"
You will see a full more posts touting the wonder and whimsy of this website.  I was searching for a modern take on the paper doll - something I spent HOURS of my childhood playing with.  I want to bring back the simplicity of those time to children who are surrounded by things that cause them to be lazy in the wonder of what the simple things can offer to their little lives.

You see some samples of the Aladdin and the Camping paper cities.  I modified the project for the younger children who are ready to cut in such detail yet.  To my delight this was an incredibly popular option for the children/

Take some time to peruse Joel's site - there are some great coloring pages that will entice you took take out your crayons and play.

Creativity and Movement: Owls Come in Whimsical Packages

One of the things I love about teaching arts and crafts to children is the permission I am able to give myself to play and explore and see what happens.  This many times begins to spill into my 'big girl' paintings.  I see a lot of joy in each of these creations.  It reminds me that the outside package may continue to grow and change but you can choose to keep the inner light sparkling bright.

For this project, we used good old paper plates, markers, crayons, watercolors and construction.  Why don't you have a go as a meditation practice.  Quietly gather the supplies and find a quiet area to work and play.

Creativity and Movement: Tell us a Story About Birds That Don't Fly...

We had a fun time using our imaginations and coming up with ways to help birds that DO NOT fly.  In the scenario we came up with, we decided to allow balloons to become the bird's companions.  We had a lot of fun with naming the birds and talking about what types of birds do not fly.
