Ducks have waterproof feathers that keep them dry, can sleep with one eye open while keeping half their brain awake, and chat with each other while still inside their eggs before they hatch! [1, 2, 3]
Cool Duck Superpowers
  • Super Waterproof Feathers: Ducks have a special oil gland. They rub this oil on their feathers with their beaks. It makes them like a raincoat so water slides right off. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Half-Asleep Vigilance: When ducks sleep in a line, the ducks on the outside keep one eye open. That side of their brain stays awake to watch for danger. [1, 2, 3]
  • Talking Before Hatching: Baby ducklings talk to their mom and each other through their shells. This helps them all hatch at the exact same time.
