French artist Georges Braque (1882–1963) co-invented Cubism with Pablo Picasso, mixed sand into his paint for cool textures, and invented art collages by gluing real wallpaper to his canvases. [1, 2, 3]

Invented Cubism Like a Puzzle

He and Pablo Picasso started painting objects as if they were broken into geometric cubes and shapes.
Their paintings looked so much alike that even they could not always tell whose work was whose. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Painted with Real Sand

He mixed sand and sawdust right into his paint.
This made his paintings rough and bumpy instead of flat and smooth. [1, 2]

Invented Paper Collage

He was the first person to glue real pieces of wallpaper and newspaper straight onto a drawing.
This mixed media style is now a favorite craft project in art classrooms everywhere
