Josey's Art School Episode #2: A Soulful Bird Banner Tutorial Mixed Media Art Beginner Art Lesson

Birds in old paintings are like secret code books! Painters long ago used tiny birds to hide special messages, tell stories, or show how much they loved nature.

Hidden Secret Messages
  • The Goldfinch Code: In old paintings of babies or families, you might see a small bird with red and yellow on its face called a goldfinch. People back then used it as a secret symbol for healing, hope, and tough times. [1, 2]
  • The Magic Peacock: Peacocks show up a lot in old art. Because people long ago thought a peacock’s bright feathers never faded or rotted, the bird became a magical painted symbol for living forever. [1, 2]

  • John James Audubon's Quest: A famous artist named John James Audubon loved birds so much he drew and painted them life-size. As a boy, he wanted to know if the exact same birds came back to their nests every spring. He tied tiny silver threads to their legs to track them, helping invent how scientists study bird travel today
