Fun Facts About Mark Rothko
- He learned four languages: He was born in Latvia (in Eastern Europe) and spoke Russian, Yiddish, and Hebrew as a little kid. He did not learn English until he moved to America with his family when he was ten years old. [1, 2]
- He used to teach kids: Before he became famous for his giant color paintings, Rothko worked as a drawing teacher for children in New York starting in 1929. He loved how freely and imaginatively children expressed themselves. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- He wanted you to stand super close: Unlike most museum art that you view from afar, Rothko wanted people to stand only about 18 inches away from his giant paintings. He wanted the colors to fill your whole vision so you felt completely wrapped up inside the art.
