Sailboats use the power of the wind and fabric sails to glide across the water. They have a long history of exploration, clever design tricks, and fun records that make them fascinating to learn about.
- They can go faster than the wind: Special sailboat designs can move faster than the wind pushing them because the sails and hull act like airplane wings to generate extra speed. [1, 2, 3]
- They can sail right into the wind: Even though wind pushes them, boats use a hidden underwater fin called a keel to zigzag sideways against the wind direction without getting blown backward. [1]
- "Feeling blue" comes from sailing: Long ago, if a ship lost its captain during a voyage, the crew would fly blue flags and put up blue ribbons to show they were sad. [1]
