Did you know?

Beaches are amazing places made of colorful sand, ancient rocks, and hidden ocean animals. They take thousands of years to form as waves crash and break down stones into tiny pieces. [1]
Crazy Colors of Sand
  • Sand is not always tan or gold.
  • Some beaches have black sand made from melted volcanic rock.
  • Other beaches are bright pink from tiny crushed sea shells, or even sparkling green! [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The Parrotfish Sand Maker
  • Some white sand beaches are made by fish!
  • Tropical parrotfish eat small bits of coral for a snack.
  • The hard coral comes out as clean, powdery white sand. [1]
Super Long and Super Short Beaches
  • The longest beach in the world is Praia do Cassino in Brazil, stretching over 130 miles long.
  • There is even a secret beach in Spain called Playa de Gulpiyuri that is stuck in the middle of a green grassy field far away from the open ocean
