Joseys Art School Episode #49 VanGogh and Sunflower Kids Art Lesson Montessori Art Lesson Tutorial

Vincent van Gogh painted a famous series of sunflower pictures because he loved their bright yellow color and sturdy, cheerful look. He painted them to decorate his home and to say thank you to a good friend. [1, 2, 3]
He Painted More Than One
  • Van Gogh did not just paint one single sunflower picture.
  • He painted an entire series of them in a yellow house in France.
  • He used mostly just shades of yellow to make them glow. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
He Painted Withered Flowers
  • He did not only paint fresh, perky flowers facing the sky.
  • He loved painting sunflowers at every stage of life.
  • Some of his flowers have drooping petals and are going to seed. [1, 2, 3, 4]
They Were Meant for a Friend
  • Van Gogh painted the bright flowers to welcome his artist friend, Paul Gauguin.
  • He wanted the paintings to show a feeling of gratitude and friendship.
  • Gauguin loved the pictures and said they were completely and perfectly "Vincent"
