Fun with Baking Soda? Yes Please!

Here’s an easy science experiment featuring ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda that you and your kids can enjoy at home. The best part? There’s no messy clean-up afterwards. Simply fill a jar with tap water and drop in 4 drops of food coloring. Add 1/4 cup of vinegar, 3 tsp baking soda, and a small handful of buttons (HINT: rice and pasta also work). Then, sit back and watch them rise and fall.

Baking soda is a magic tool for kids' fun. It mixes with vinegar to make safe, fizzy science projects and crafts. Six fun ideas include erupting volcanoes, fizzing sidewalk paint, magic balloon inflators, rainbow reaction trays, glowing oobleck, and dancing rice or seeds. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Fun Baking Soda Activities
  • Erupting Volcano: Mix baking soda and red food coloring inside a model volcano, then pour in vinegar for a bubbly lava flow. [1]
  • Fizzing Sidewalk Paint: Combine baking soda, water, and washable paint, then let kids brush it on concrete and spray vinegar to watch it foam. [1, 2]
  • Magic Balloon Inflator: Put baking soda in a balloon and vinegar in a bottle, fit it over the top, and watch the gas blow the balloon up. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Rainbow Color Trays: Hide drops of food coloring under mounds of baking soda in a tray, then use droppers of vinegar to reveal colorful fizzing spots. [1]
  • Dancing Seeds: Drop small seeds or rice into a glass with water, baking soda, and a splash of lemon juice to see them bounce up and down. [1]
  • Tie-Dye Slime: Mix baking soda, glue, and contact lens solution to transform liquid glue into stretchy, moldable sensory slime.
