New Discovery For This Girl - Frank Stella and His Glorious Work

Frank Stella Paper Mobiles Field Elementary Art Blog! 

It's definitely time to start perusing the art scene again!  The summer is so full of possibility for me because I have more time to discover new (to me) artists such as Frank Stella.  

A shout out to this art teacher for sharing her fun project. 
 
Frank Stella was a famous American artist who made bold, geometric paintings and giant sculptures using bright stripes, unconventional shapes, and even 3D printing technology. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
He Painted Houses First
  • Frank's father made him help paint and decorate houses when he was young.
  • He learned how to scrape floors, hold heavy brushes, and use house paint.
  • Later on, he used regular house-painters' brushes and house enamel to make his famous early artworks. [1, 2]
His Canvases Weren't Just Squares
  • Most painters use a flat, square, or rectangular canvas.
  • Frank thought that was boring, so he built canvases shaped like stars, zigzags, and curves.
  • Some of his later art popped right off the wall into the room, looking more like giant, colorful 3D toys or roller coasters than normal paintings. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
