Did you know?
William H. Johnson was a famous American painter who started by copying newspaper comics, traveled all over the world, and invented a bright, bold style of art that looks a bit like children's drawings! [1, 2, 3, 4]
Started by Copying Comics

- His teacher believed in him so much that when he couldn't afford to go to Paris, the teacher raised $1,500 to send him.
Painted Like a Child on Purpose
- Later in life, he changed his art to a "folk art" style.
- He used flat shapes, bright colors, and simple lines that looked like how a child might draw.
- He did this to make his paintings feel powerful, honest, and full of everyday joy. You can explore many of his works at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
