The famous artist Henri Matisse loved painting bowls of fruit! He used bright, wild colors and flat patterns to turn simple apples, oranges, and lemons into exciting, joyful puzzle-like artworks instead of making them look real. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Fun Facts About Matisse and Fruit
  • Wild Colors: Matisse did not paint fruit the color it actually was in real life. If he felt like it, he would paint an orange purple, or make a lemon bright red, because he believed colors showed big feelings. [1, 2, 3]
  • The Pattern Party: He loved surrounding his fruit bowls with crazy, loud wallpaper and tablecloth patterns. The fruit had to share space with swirling zig-zags and bright flowers. [1]
  • Real Fruit Studios: Matisse kept bowls of real fruit in his studio to paint. But because he painted them so slowly, the real fruit would often get completely rotten or eaten by bugs before he finished the picture!
