Josey's Art School Episode #25 Circles Antique Look Art Journal Beginner Kids Classes

A circle is a flat shape with no straight sides and no corners. Every point on its outer edge is the exact same distance from the middle point. It is also the only shape that has an endless number of symmetry lines.

No Corners and One Side
  • Unlike squares or triangles, a circle has zero corners.
  • It is made of one continuous curved line that loops back to the start. [1, 2]
The Magic Number Pi (\(\pi \))
  • If you measure straight across a circle through the middle (the diameter) and wrap that length around the outside (the circumference), it fits a little more than 3 times.
  • This special ratio is called Pi, and its decimal numbers go on forever without ever repeating. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Infinite Symmetry
  • You can slice a circle right through its center in any direction, and both halves will always match perfectly.
  • Because you can do this an endless number of times, a circle has infinite lines of symmetry
